Korea 2012 Expenses Revealed

**Sorry for the poor picture quality. I need to find out how to transform my excel sheet to jpeg still haha.

This is my TOTAL Expense for my recent Korea trip. As you can see, you can actually travel to Korea for around 20-25k ALL IN and that is if you limit your shopping/pasalubong and get a very good airfare deal :) Php 30,000++ for 6 whole days is not bad at all :)

NOTE: Check out my latest blog about Korea Expenses as of 2014 here.

  1. I noticed your board and lodging was on the cheap side. Could please explain further? Was this a group trip?

    1. Hi! Yup this is a group trip. We were 6 in a room & we divided the cost. But if you're only 2 in a room let's say, it would cost you around USD 30 more. Plus, we stayed in a guesthouse therefore it's cheap but decent anyway! :)

    2. Hi! Nope don't worry if your bank account is new bec they only require u to pass a bank certificate and not a bank statement. But, make sure that you have at least $1,000 or php 50k in your account to serve as "show money".

    3. Yup we explored Seoul w/o a tour guide bec it's cheaper & more affordable for the whole group. And no, sorry I don't know any tour packages for korea.

  8. Hi Ms. Tin! Nice blog, very helpful. One question, when in April usually in full bloom ang cherry blossoms? We are planning to go next year apr 20-25 ang tentative dates of travel namin.

    1. Hey Ninie, Thank you so much! :) anyway, regarding your question... I haven't been to Korea during the Spring season so I don't really know when exactly magbloom yung cherry blossoms but... I have close friends who went to Korea just few months ago around April 18 to 20+ of this year and was able to see cherry blossoms in Yeouido but surprisingly not in Nami Island (where Winter Sonata was filmed). So, I'm guessing that there's a big chance that you guys will be able to see the cherry blossoms :)... basta pray hard ;)

Weather is unpredictable now a days din kasi... you know global warming haha! but really, when we went there last March 18, we didn't expect snow because until February lang daw jyun but luckily, we experienced snow twice pa :D so there! good luck and hope you get to see cherry blossoms nga message me if you do ;)

    5. Okay! I'll try to research and ask friends about details if ever my i.t. will not permit me to cross over Malaysia since I'll be in SG for a few days lang :) But, I do know friends who have tried that and I'll definitely ask about their insights :)

  11. Hello po. Honey here. Pasensya na po medyo madami akong tanong.. :)

Saan at paano po kayo nakapagpapalit into Korean won? Pinapalit niyo po ba muna sa dollar dito then pinapalit sa won when you got into Seoul? O peso to won na before kayo umalis?

Gumagana na po ba nag phones from the Philippines pagdating ng Seoul? Sabi kasi nung iba hindi raw. Na-try niyo po ba yung mag-rent ng phone at the Incheon Airport?

How long does it take to go to Nami Island? Mas madali ba na straight from Incheon? Since early morning po kasi dating ko, I'm considering it as my first stop.

How much po yung usual na meals doon? Nabasa ko po kas mas mahal daw sa Phil.

Alin po yung mas maganda? Everland o Lotte World?

Nagshopping rin po ba kayo? Ano po kaibahan ng mga shopping places like Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, and Nandaemun? :D

    1. WOW! :))

Hi there Honey! Well di naman masyado madami questions mo…slight lang! haha just kidding :) Anyway, here are the As to your Qs:

      1. Since Korean Won is hard to exchange here in the Philippines (good if you find one), what we usually do is exchange Peso to USD then when we arrive at the airport in Korea, we exchange our USD to KWN enough for a day’s expense or two. Then when we go around the city to look for a money changer because it’s cheaper there though, little difference lang.

      2. Sometimes! Well.. most of the time no signal haha. I’m not sure if Smart or other network works but for my family and friends who are all Globe subscribers had a hard time in terms of signal. I went there twice already and both trips I have no signal at all. Wifi is available in most establishments though; so maybe communicating through Internet is the next best thing to do.

Did not try to rent phones at the airport. SUPER EXPENSIVE. What we did, we asked our guesthouse if they provide cellphone rentals—yun mas affordable but prices vary depending on their terms and not all hotels/guesthouses provide cellphone rentals. BTW, in case you were able to get these cell rentals…most probably the language is in Korean (operator) haha so good luck my friend! :)

      3. I haven’t been to Nami Island too bad. But yes, it’s time consuming because it’s a long travel. Allot 1 day for Nami Island.

      4. Humm… not really sure, but I know Full House is near the airport. Check my detailed Full House blog entry and decide if you can go there (with your luggage? Unless you find way to not bring them with you).

      5. T-Money! It’s fast, efficient, and sulit because you can use it anywhere. It’s as good as cash plus there are discount coupons solely for tourists.

      6. No. As much as possible we don’t avail tours because it’s expensive haha. I’m a budget traveller so not really my cup of tea :) Unless there are other reasons beyond the fee then that’s the time I weigh whether to avail a tour or not.

      7. Depends on the location and how cheap you want your food to be. Average I think around Php 300-500? But definitely big serving…enough for 2 at least. NOTE: Some street food are priced higher than one meal in a restaurant not like in Manila…big difference in terms of “street food” and “restaurant food” gets? Haha well…some lang naman.

      8. Depends on your time/schedule, type of thrill, age group, budget, etc. You can compare my detailed Everland and Lotte World blog entries instead.

      9. 2 round edges.

      10. Meyongdong, mix of foreign and local stores. Dongdaemun, night market (Divisoria type that’s super big as in one whole area not just one building haha). Best to go there around 11-ish or 12 mn until early morning. Most stores are closed during the “usual store opening” in the morning.

FYI: clothes are a bit pricey in Korea but it is a make-up heaven for women! Skin Food is about 50-60% OFF :O Nakakabaliw haha :). Etude and Face Shop I think about the same price in the Philippines. Not sure about Tony Moly though.

I hope I was able to answer all the questions in your mind na ah! :) haha Thanks for the comment na din!

  18. Hi Tin, great blog, very helpful. Just want to ask how many minutes away from incheon airport to seoul, plan of staying at Bong house( don't know if you're familiar), kasi 12MN arrival namin, open ba subway ng midnight? What transportation pwede mo marecommend? Where can i get the T-Money.

Thank you so much. God Bless.

    Replies
    1. From Incheon airport to Seoul station? via MRT it's about an hour to 1 1/5. But since most MRT station closes around 11pm then you must take a taxi not the black ones as those are extra expensive especially at night around 12mn onwards. They have around 20% mark up.

For T-money, you can get it in any subway station (machine). Since you will travel via taxi, no need to buy one right away. You can buy perhaps the next day nalang

    1. Hi! Clothes in korea are very expensive although style is cute and sophisticated. I have a hard time buying clothes in korea because I tend to compare it in the Philippines e.g. greenhils or tiangge clothes. What's super cheap...make up! Specifically skin food! Discount os about 60%up vs Philippine price. But mga Etude, Face shop, Too Cool For School make up almost the same price lang sa Manila :)

      Delete
    2. You can buy cheap priced clothes in Dongdaemun night market. Mall starts around 10:30 to 11 pm mejo mahal din though but yung bargain as in "wholesale" market sa streets lang starts around 1:30-2 am

    3. ohh.. > , < ganoon ba... what korean make up brands yung okay aside from etude and yung mga kilala na dito sa pinas? hehe.. am into make up din..hehe pero gusto ko sana clothes kasi ang cute ng mga designs nila. =_= make up heaven pala doon.. 60% discount.. pwedeng i-retail dito paguwi. =p

    4. Skinfood lang binibili ko kasi mahal sa Pinas pero dito 60-70% off yung regular price nila super dami pang free samples haha so I usuallu buy patingi2 in different stores para more samples! :) and yes pwd nga sya i-retail haha :) I think Innisfree okay din parang organic2 sya same as Nature Republic.

yung clothes cute talaga lalo na mga coat nila parang ang sarap pumorma everyday hahaha kaso mejo pricey lng unless you buy yung super unique na walang ganung design sa Manila :)

    1. Hi Janet! thanks for your kind words :) kakatuwa naman :)

Regarding your question... Korea is a safe country and great for solo travelers. I know a lot of people who went there on their own (mostly girls!) and okay and liberating naman daw yung experiences nila. Personally, I think at first maooverwhelm ka sa subway nila especially if you're not used to travelling alone and with a complex subway system. But eventually, you'll get a hang of it as long as you research very well all exit points, landmark etc.. :) English will be a challenge pero kayang kaya naman!!! I think you should still pursue your travel kahit alone ka and without your boyfriend (aww sad). Worth the experience ang Korea promise! :)

Warning lang...madaming couple2 stuff sa Korea so baka lalo mo mamiss si boyfie haha :) Give him pasalubong nalang ;)

  29. Good day Tin,
Sorry for posting anonymous. First time to post on a blog. First of.. Very nice blog. Extremely informative.
So....questions...Will travel to Korea on Feb 2015. I have booked RT flight and hotel.. Will be staying in Namsan Hill Hotel first few days then off to Holiday Inn Alpensia for some ski activities. Do you have any suggestions about that place?
And important thing..My wife's passport was when she was still single. Got married this year. We travelled to SG when we got engaged. I have travelled to US and have a valid B1 OCS visa. Will the Korean embassy require my wife to change her status / surname in her passport before she can be allowed to get a visa. Or our marriage cert. will be enough? She can provide additional docs. like car deed of sale. And I can provide a title for the house. Thank you in advance.
    Hope to hear from you.

    1. Hi! Thank you for leaving a message :) Now regarding your questions...

      1. It's great that you will visit some ski resorts on Feb however, I am sorry because I haven't experienced it also therefore I don't have any suggestions yet on what to do, where to eat, or where to stay :( Skiing is one item in my bucket list that I haven't ticked off. Well...hopefully next year! :)

      2. About your wife's passport... no clue as well since I only blog about what I have already experienced. You may ask the embassy directly about your concern just to be sure but I do know and I highly suggest you show other credentials such as her car deed of sale, the house title, and most especially your marriage certificate :)

Sorry if I wasn't able to answer all your questions but if ever you've figured it out, kindly comment and share your experiences here again! :) Thanks and happy holidays to you and your wife! I am sure both of you will loooovvve Korea! :)

    1. Hi! I already replied to her :) Here's my answer to your friend:

Hi, you may check the official website of Korean embassy for the updated requirements or check my blog post about Korean tourist visa here:

      http://tincowashere.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-to-get-tourist-visa-to-south-korea.html?showComment=1421648282256#c5045483861939519683

Regarding the ITR, you may present other requirements if you don't have one since the ITR is just optional or additional supporting documents anyway. I have pasted the other document options here from my previous post about Korean visa:

      -----------
      II. Additional requirements for ADULTS:

      1) Original Employment Certificate (COE) or Photocopy of Business Registration issued by SEC or DTI
      2) Original Personal Bank Certificate (PREFERABLY Php 50,000 and up JUST TO BE SURE...although the embassy did not state the minimum amount for the bank statement..I always tell my friends to prepare for this because it is an strong indication that you can support yourself in Korea and that you have enough money to still go back in the Philippines--yung hindi ka magwowork doon at maging TNT aka "tago ng tago" hahah just kidding!)
      3) Individual ITR or Form 2316 Copy of previous year
Note: If any of the additional documents can’t be submitted, submit instead Land Title, Vehicle Registration, or Pension Certificates.
